Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Psychiatric Hospital Bruges
OLV Brugge wayfinding study

The project involved a combination of both indoor and outdoor signage.

Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Psychiatric Hospital Bruges has decided to provide completely new signage on their campus. The reason is the many renovation projects in the pipeline and the updated house style but, above all, the fact that the existing signage is no longer adequate.  After an extensive round of studies, the client chose Signburo to develop a new concept.

The project involved a combination of both indoor and outdoor signage.  Several destinations are in the main building, but to reach many other final destinations, one had to leave the main building, preferably by the shortest, best way out.

Moreover, many services and buildings already had specific designations that could cause confusion. In addition, several renovations and refurbishments were planned, which meant that signage had to be highly flexible.

After comparing and testing various concepts, we opted, in consultation with the client, for a combined system of letters, numbers, and colours. In the design of the new signage, all final destinations that a patient/visitor/staff/supplier should be able to reach on their own have been given their own number or letter.

Departments have been given a letter from the alphabet, while all other destinations are given a number. The reference is designed so that at each decision point, the direction is given to each destination on campus.

Users can reach their correct destination by following the correct letter or number. Moreover, it is complemented by a unique colour.  All departments (with letters) are indicated in red and all destinations (with numbers) in green.

Project status

The study has been conducted.  The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Psychiatric Hospital Bruges has since selected a contractor via tender and all signage has been installed.
